We Are The Association of Black Women Physicians
The Association of Black Women Physicians is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1982, committed to community health literacy and public health advocacy. We provide an ongoing forum to support the success of African-American women in medicine, science, and public health. Because Black women make up only 2.8% of the physician workforce, ABWP creates critical opportunities for social networking and mentorship for students and trainees to increase diversity in the medical profession, specifically by supporting the pipeline of future Black women physicians. Annually, ABWP distributes scholarships to deserving medical students.
Empowering the Next Generation Nationwide
We are thrilled to announce that the 2026 Rebecca Lee Crumpler, M.D. Scholarship is now open! In an exciting move to expand our impact, eligibility has been extended to include all Black female medical students across the United States. The ABWP provides these scholarships based on a combination of financial need and academic merit. We are looking for dedicated candidates who embody our mission: an organized network of Black women physicians committed to improving public health and welfare through the advancement of community health and knowledge. If you are a female student in medical school, we invite you to apply for the Rebecca Lee Cumpler, M.D., Scholarship today
Message from the Chair
La Tanya R. Hines, M.D. F.A.C.O.G. As the Chair of the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) Sister-to-Sister Program Committee and the Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarship Selection Committee, it is my distinct honor to officially launch our 2026 scholarship campaign.
Our mission has always been rooted in supporting the next generation of Black women physicians. The Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarship—named in honor of the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States—is a vital platform for providing financial relief and professional encouragement to students who carry that same torch of excellence and resilience.
Today’s medical students face unprecedented challenges, from significant financial debt to the immense pressure of navigating a complex healthcare landscape. By easing these financial barriers, we allow our scholars to focus on their academic aspirations and their ultimate goal: serving our communities with compassion and brilliance.
On behalf of the ABWP, we invite all eligible students to explore our scholarship opportunities and apply. Your dedication to medicine is a purposeful investment in a healthier, more equitable future for us all. We look forward to celebrating your success.
Sincerely,
La Tanya R. Hines, M.D. F.A.C.O.G.

Calling all future healthcare leaders!
The Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP) is proud to announce a major expansion of our legacy. Each year, we award the Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD Scholarship to exceptional Black female medical students.
